When Should I Replace My Carpets?

August 29, 2019 by My Affordable Flooring

Carpets are great. They provide warm and comfort to cold, dull rooms. But, how can you tell it’s time to replace your old carpeting and get something new installed?

My Affordable Flooring has been in the flooring business for years. We know when an old carpet needs replacing. Let’s take a look at some of the sure signs your carpet’s way too old.

Your Carpets Are Stained

This is the number one reason you should replace an old carpet. If there are multiple, obvious stains in your carpeting, you should replace it. For one, stains are ugly. Whether it’s the result of an accident or a messy house pet, stains embarrass most people. Even professional cleaning cannot remove tough carpet stains sometimes. We also know that many at-home cleaning supplies can make the problem worse.

If you’re covering up massive carpet stains with furniture or rugs, it’s time to replace the carpets for something fresh. You cannot hide blemishes forever. There comes a time when you need to purge and replace.

The Carpets Are in Poor Condition

Is there excessive degrees of wear and tear on your carpet? If so, it’s about time to replace that old carpet for a new one. Rips and tears in carpets look bad. They also get much worse once you start to notice them. If you notice them early, there may be a chance to preserve the carpet’s lifespan a bit. However, often times once you get a snag in the carpet, it usually just gets worse.

Tears and snags on the stairs of main walkways? If yes, that’s dangerous. You cannot risk the safety of family members and house visitors forever. Eventually, accidents can happen. Someone may get their shoe caught in the snag and trip. If that’s possible in your home, it’s time to get the carpets replaced.

Your Carpets Smell Bad

If your carpet is noticeably smelly, then you need to replace it. Carpet cleaning can help some. However, if you’ve tried carpeting cleaning services and still smell the carpet when you enter the room, replace it ASAP. It could be molding or worse underneath in the carpet pad. Carpets can also be a source of increase allergy symptoms. Older carpets catch and trap allergens more easily, which can cause spikes in allergies.

How Often Should I Be Vacuuming My Carpets?

July 21, 2019 by My Affordable Flooring

Carpets are great. They improve a room’s overall comfort and feel in a way that hardwood can’t. However, they can also hide dirt and germs that would otherwise be cleaned right away. So, how often should you actually be vacuuming your carpets? Let’s take a look to see just how to keep your carpets not just looking clean, but actually being clean.

How Much Traffic Does the Carpet Get?

Understand how much traffic each carpeted area in your house gets. For example, a guest bedroom may only get traffic a few times a month. On the other hand, the master bedroom likely gets the most traffic of all. The frequency that people enter and exit the room should be a major consideration for cleaning purposes.

A room with little foot traffic won’t get dirty as fast because no one will be tracking dirt or germs in. You only have to vacuum these rooms a couple of times a month. However, heavy foot traffic is accompanied by more dust and germs. These rooms should be vacuumed about once a week.

Benefits of Vacuuming Regularly

Busy rooms should be vacuumed often to make sure they are always in the best possible condition.

  • Improve the look of your carpets
    • Vacuumed carpets are clean and fluffy, making them look and feel better. Consider vacuuming before and after having guests over to improve your home’s overall comfort level.
  • Remove most dirt, germs, and other particles
    • Carpets harbor dirt and germs, not to mention glass. Broken glass hidden within a carpet could cause serious injury, so be certain to always vacuum, especially after an accident.
  • Extend the lifespan of your carpets
    • Regularly vacuumed carpets look better and last longer. In addition, you should always clean the spots right away if someone spills to avoid bacteria growth.

In a Serious Case, Call on the Experts from My Affordable Flooring

Vacuuming can help keep a carpet looking clean, but it isn’t always a hundred percent clean in reality. You should have all carpets cleaned by professionals at least once a year to make sure you don’t miss any hidden messes.

Carpet Mold: Getting it Out of Your Milwaukee Home

March 20, 2019 by My Affordable Flooring

The signs of carpet mold range across the board; from colors to odors, there are many signs that point to mold. Ingesting mold or being exposed to its airborne pathogens can cause a number of health hazards. If you suspect mold in your carpet, it’s important to act fast. Here’s what you need to know about how to identify carpet mold and getting it out of your home.

What Causes Mold?

Mold growth is the product of many factors. According to a post from the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, mold needs the following: moisture, oxygen, a food source, and surface to grow on. Carpet is highly susceptible to mold because the fibers can retain moisture, food, and oxygen. If you think you need to clean your carpet, we provide top-notch carpeting cleaning services. Mold can be easy to spot if you know what to look for.

What Does Mold Look Like?

Mold often looks like a stain and can take on the form of different colors and smells. The sure signs of mold are black or green stains that grow and a mildew-like smell. When mold grows, it presents a number of health hazards and a burden for homeowners.

Why is Mold Dangerous?

Exposure to mold presents numerous health hazards which can cause symptoms such as respiratory issues, as well as skin and eye irritation. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found evidence linking mold to an influx of childhood asthma. If you suspect mold growing in your carpet, you need to act fast to identify the source and clean it.

Getting Mold Out of Carpets

The first step in getting rid of mold starts by pointing out the source. Be on the lookout for visible signs of mold which may appear as black or green with fuzzy white spots. You should also keep an eye out for wet carpet and a mildew smell.

The second step to removing mold is most important. If you have discovered a newly formed, small patch of mold or wet carpet, you need to act fast to save your carpet. You have a 24-hour window to remove mold. This can be done by steam cleaning and/or cleaning the affected area with water and vinegar or solvents specifically for removing mold.Homeowners will likely have to install new carpeting when mold growth goes unresolved. However, there are several things you can do to prevent mold from forming.

How to Prevent Mold on Carpets

The most important thing you can do to prevent mold on carpets is to be attentive. Make sure you clean and dry up spills, vacuum as often as possible and monitor the room’s humidity. You lessen the chances of having to deal with mold with a little bit of maintenance.

Need Your Carpets Cleaned or Replaced?

Carpet mold can be cleaned without having to replace your carpet if you act fast. However, if mold has grown for long periods of time, you’ll have to replace your carpet. If you are in the Milwaukee or Chicago area, call on My Affordable Flooring for carpet installation and cleaning.

The 5 Most Durable Flooring Options for High-Traffic Areas in Your Home

October 24, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

Most Durable Flooring Options

There’s something special and exciting about customizing your home to the exact way you want it. But before you start fawning over every flooring sample you can find, you need to make a list of must-haves.

For low-traffic areas of your home, aesthetics can be the deciding factor. When it comes to high-traffic areas like hallways and living rooms, though, you also need to look for the most durable flooring options. That is, unless you want to go through the whole process again in a few years.

In the long run, choosing one of the more durable types of flooring for your home can end up saving you considerable time and money.

Various decorative tiles samples

Most Durable Flooring Options for High-Traffic Areas

Whether your floors will face kids, pets, high heels, work boots, or a little of everything, your best bet is to go with one of these options:

Natural Stone Tile

Tile floors are known for their clean look and long-lasting quality. Keep in mind that some materials are harder than others, though, so your best bet is to look for natural stone tile floors like travertine.

Bamboo Hardwood

As beautiful as hardwood is, most types are best suited for low-traffic rooms. Bamboo, however, is a wonderful exception. The adhesives and coatings manufacturers use make bamboo a force to be reckoned with when it comes to scratches.

For the most durable bamboo hardwood flooring, look for options that are strand-woven. Stick to high-end, high-quality varieties as well.

Laminate Hardwood

If you love the look of hardwood floors, another durable option is laminate flooring. It’s more scratch-resistant than natural hardwood, so it will stand up against paws and claws. However, keep in mind that laminate is susceptible to moisture damage. So, it’s not often a good choice for bathrooms and other high-moisture areas.

High-Quality Vinyl

Before you dismiss it as an outdated choice, today’s vinyl flooring is nothing like your grandmother’s kitchen floors from the 1970s.

Modern vinyl comes in higher-quality options. It’s also available in a nearly endless array of styles. For instance, some of the most popular choices are made to mimic hardwood flooring and tile floors.

Berber Carpet

It should come as no surprise that carpet isn’t as durable as its harder counterparts. Still, we recognize that some homeowners love the comfort and warmth they get from a carpeted floor.

If you have your heart set on carpeting but you want durability, go for Berber carpet. This style uses short loops for a clean and flat look. It’s easier to clean and holds up better against high traffic than high-pile carpets too.

Choosing Your Flooring With the Future in Mind

In an ideal world, you’d be able to choose your favorite flooring options based on looks alone. The reality of homeownership, however, is that unless you have an unlimited budget, you need to find options that will hold up against the wear and tear of daily life.

The good news is that today there are plenty of great-looking options available in durable and low-maintenance materials. With the ideas above, you can get started finding the most durable flooring for your home.

For more guidance in your flooring design, contact our home flooring experts, who can recommend the ideal options for each room of your house. We have a long history of creating gorgeous, durable floors in Wisconsin and Illinois.

3 Carpet Cleaning Tips for New Dog Owners

September 26, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

You’ve gained a new canine friend, congratulations! Now comes the part where you learn how to take care of him. And more than that, you’ve got to learn how to take care of your house now that a dog has joined the family.

Whether they live outside most of the time or not, dogs can leave messes wherever they go. Dog hair alone can make your carpets messier.

Carpet cleaning with a dog in the home doesn’t have to be a hassle, though. To help you adjust quicker, here are three tips for new dog owners.

Someone holding cute puppy.

1. Use Masking Tape

Masking tape is great for all sorts of crafts, but did you know it’s great for cleaning, too? Depending on the type of dog you own, you may end up with lots of hair on your carpet. Large amounts of carpet can clog your vacuum like nothing else.

To save your vacuum the extra strain, go over your carpeting with masking tape first. All you’ll need is a paint roller and a lot of tape.

Wrap the tape around the roller with the sticky side facing out. Then roll your new tool all over the carpet to pick up hair before you vacuum! If you’ve ever used a lint roller for clothing, this works essentially the same way.

2. Clean Stains Quickly

If you’ve purchased a puppy, there’s a good chance he’ll have some accidents. Before your dog is potty trained, be prepared to clean urine from your carpet.

Urine left too long can permanently change the color of your carpet, so act as quickly as you can. First, absorb as much moisture as you can. Once you’ve done that, use a solution to help clean your carpet. This can be a urine remover purchased from your local store or you can use soap and water.

To use the soap and water method, mix 1/4 teaspoon of clear dishwashing liquid with one cup of tepid water. Apply to the affected area, then dry with a clean towel and rinse with tepid water. You may need to go through this process more than once.

3. Scoop Up Solids

There’s more to picking up solids than you may think. Don’t just use a paper towel or rag to pick them up. When using that method you apply a squeezing motion, which may force the substance into the carpet.

Instead, use something solid, like a putty knife or other dull knife. Scrape the solid into a dustpan or onto something else, then lift it from the carpet.

To clean stains where solids were left, try using an oxygenated bio-enzymatic cleaner. It will take time for the cleaner to do its job, but it will help remove the stain.

Try These Tips for New Dog Owners

Having a dog is tons of fun, but it’s important to know how to clean up after them properly. When bringing a new dog home, your carpets are one part of your house that will take the biggest beating. Luckily, there doesn’t have to be any lasting stains or damage.

These carpet cleaning tips for new dog owners will help you keep your carpets in tip-top shape. Keep them in mind when bringing Fido home. You’ll be happy that you did!

A Brief Guide to Different Types of Home Carpeting

August 8, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

Decorating the interior of a home is exciting because there are so many creative decisions you get to make.

And flooring is one of the biggest interior design decisions you can make because it fills every inch of the home. On the surface, choosing flooring may seem simple and straightforward, but there’s actually a lot of designs to choose from. And, personality can show in a person’s home depending on how they choose to design it.

When you pick carpeting for rooms in your home, there are several factors to consider. Here is your guide to different types of carpet so you can make the best decision for your home.

modern luxury apartment home with many large windows, bright light and carpet

Types of Carpet Designs

Although there are lots of different carpets you can choose from, there are really only two main categories of carpets: loop pile and cut pile. Each of these two categories has a few different carpet styles to consider.

Loop Pile Carpet

Loop pile carpet is defined by having the ends of the carpet in little loops. This type of carpeting is more durable and easier to clean if you spill something on it. However, it is also less soft and doesn’t give as much cushion as cut pile carpeting.

You can choose from two types of loop pile carpeting: level loop and multi-level loop.

  • Level loop means that each loop end of the carpet is at an even level. This style works best in high-traffic areas of your home because it is the most durable.
  • Multi-level loop carpet has loops that are not uniform. Some loops are higher than others, giving it a more textured pattern.

Although they don’t provide as much comfort, loop pile carpets are great for high-traffic areas in your home because they last much longer and require less carpet cleaning.

Cut Pile Carpet

Cut pile carpet means the ends of the carpet have been cut, so there is no loop at the top. This style of carpet lacks the durability of loop pile carpet, but it is much softer and provides more cushion.

There are several types of cut pile carpet, including plush, textured, saxony, frieze, and cable.

  • Plush carpet has a smooth and even texture that can give any room a more formal appearance.
  • Textured carpet has an uneven surface length, giving it a more rough-textured look than plush carpeting.
  • Saxony is similar to plush, but the carpet fibers are longer and twisted to give it more body than other carpet types. The main downside with this carpet style is that footprints tend to linger for a while.
  • Frieze carpet, also known as shag, has much longer fibers than the other carpet types. This style isn’t best in high-traffic areas because it is the least durable and becomes dirty very easily.
  • Cable carpet has long, thick fibers making it more durable than other long fiber carpets. This style of carpet is not only durable but very comfortable as well.

For More Information

Choosing the right carpeting for your home is an important first step in interior design. You can opt for durability, comfort, or a little bit of both when deciding on a carpet.

If still not sure which type of carpeting is best for you, feel free to call us for help. We’re experts on the different styles of carpeting from which homeowners have to choose. So, please feel free to contact us for advice or an estimate.

Carpet vs. Hardwood: What Should I Go For?

July 11, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

Are you remodeling your home and having trouble deciding which is the best flooring to install?

Carpet vs. hardwood is an age-old debate and both have their ups and downs. The type of look you want to achieve in your home and how much you want to spend are just two factors to consider when making this big choice. Flooring is a big part of how your home will end up looking, so it’s important to weigh the options carefully.

Here are the pros and cons of both materials so you can make the right choice.

side-by-side image showing hardwood flooring vs. carpeting

Aesthetics

Installing hardwood floors will instantly up the sophistication of your home. The look is more modern and luxurious since most people know hardwood floor is more expensive than carpet. In general:

  • Hardwood floors appear to look cleaner since they won’t collect stains or have areas of discoloration like many carpets will over time.
  • If you’re selecting purely based on a look, you really can’t go wrong with a hardwood floor. Hardwood also goes well with so many colors, textures and other materials, you won’t have to worry about matching any decor to your floor.

Comfort

There is something very cozy about living in a space with plush, soft carpet. It’s great if you have young children who are crawling around or kids who need a comfortable playspace.

Carpet also feels nicer to walk on and provides warmth throughout the house, whereas a hardwood floor can be especially cool, especially during the winter. If you don’t want to carpet the entire home, you might want to consider carpeting the living areas, like the bedrooms.

Longevity

When it comes to how long carpet or hardwood will last, hardwood won’t let you down. If the wood is installed properly and cared for, it can last decades without a problem.

You won’t have this kind of luck with carpet. Stains will pile up and it will likely need to be replaced within the first ten years of use.

If you’re planning to stay in the same home for a long time, you may want to determine the cost of a one-time hardwood floor install vs. several carpet installations. If they even out over a span of time and you prefer hardwood, it might make sense to invest in it now.

Maintenance

When it comes to maintaining a clean floor, hardwood is going to be the more convenient choice. Hardwood can be polished or restained if damage occurs.

With carpet, even with regular professional cleanings, stains set in and keep reappearing over time. You also run the risk of bacteria and other materials becoming stuck in the carpet and causing allergies.

If you or your family are sensitive to dust or highly allergic, the carpet will likely begin to cause a reaction, especially in heavily trafficked areas of the house.

Carpet vs. Hardwood: Which Is Right for You?

Now that you have more information when it comes to deciding between carpet vs. hardwood, you can make the choice that best suits your lifestyle and aesthetic. Remember to keep in mind factors like how long the material will last and how it will wear over time before you make your investment.

How to Make Carpet Look New: 5 Handy Tips

July 4, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

Carpeting starting to show its age? Over time your carpets can start to look stained, discolored, and just plain dull. Whether you have just installed new carpeting or are looking for ways to jazz up your existing carpets, there are some easy ways to do it.

Here are some helpful tips on how to make carpet look new, and how to keep your new carpeting looking new for years to come.

new carpeting in a modern living room

How to Make Carpet Look New

Proper maintenance for your carpets will keep them looking like new for many years, and keep them looking fresh and clean.

1. Professional Cleaning

Get your carpeting cleaned by professionals. This will really help get the deep dirt out. Plus, it will remove stains, pet hair, and pet and other odors. Professional carpet cleaners use a deep cleaning or steam cleaning method that gets down deep into the carpet.

Professional cleaning is recommended for all synthetic carpets because the dirt gets embedded down in the carpet. It’s great for odors, ground-in food particles, and other dirt and debris that gets tracked in.

This will also remove fleas, mites, and any other type of insect that make be making itself at home.

2. DIY Carpet Cleaner

These are perfect for keeping the professional cleaning you get up to date. The in-between steam cleanings keep the carpets fresh and clean, and they extend the results from the professional clean.

You can rent or buy the carpet cleaners, and depending on how much traffic your carpet gets, you can decide on whether owning your own is worth it. If you have kids, pets or entertain regularly, then you may want to buy one.

3. Treat Stains When They Happen

Spilled food or drinks, pet accidents, mud, and other accidents can permanently stain the carpet. You need to act fast to get it cleaned. And if it’s food or a pet mess, you need to get it up without digging it into the carpet further.

Use a stain remover, either one from the store or one you make yourself, and let it soak into the stain. Then, dab at the stain to absorb it into your cloth. Never rub at it.

If it is candle wax, simply place a tea towel or other cotton cloth over the top of it and run over it with a warm iron. The heat will draw the wax out of the carpet and into the cloth.

4. Start with a Little Prevention

There are things you can do to preserve your carpeting, such as:

  • With new carpet or once your carpet has been professionally cleaned, you can have it treated to help stop stains from soaking in.
  • For the heavy traffic areas, you can put down runners or throw carpets.
  • You can refrain from eating and drinking over the carpet.

5. Rotate Your Furniture

Try moving your furniture around regularly to prevent discoloration and dirt build up. Keep drapes closed against the direct sun, and use coasters under the feet of the furniture to stop further damage.

Clean for Life

Taking care of your carpets not only makes them look better, but it’s just healthier for babies, toddlers, and pets alike.

Carpet Installation and Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

April 22, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

With so many choices in color, style and thickness, properly maintained carpet can be a great choice for homeowners. Installing it on your own can be challenging, however. So, before you take the leap, here are a few important details on carpet installation and maintenance.

someone installing beige carpeting

Carpet Installation Pre-Laying Checks

Before considering a carpeted floor, you have to see if your floor and your home are indeed suitable for it.

First of all, your carpet installation contractor should verify that your floor is suitable for the carpet product you have chosen. This pre-laying check should include quality tests on color, texture, and thickness.

There are several other considerations as well, such as:

  • Direction
  • Pattern
  • Cut
  • And, if your carpet comes in “tiles,” your contractor will have to decide on specific tile patterns on the carpet’s layout according to your house’s floor plan.

Installing Your Carpeting

Before installing the carpet, you should also test the subfloor for moisture. Excessive moisture will prevent adhesives from sticking to the floor, which can cause wrinkling and other carpet problems. Humidity should stay between 30% and 75% during installation and for two days after.

After the carpet has been laid down, you need to maintain the temperature of all rooms between to allow the adhesive to become fully fixed. Heat and cold should not deviate from normal room temperatures for at least 48 hours after the installation.

Proper Carpet Cleaning

Carpet care has evolved into a whole science, but the basics remain the same. You need to keep your carpet clean to prolong its lifespan.

There are several methods to clean your carpet. These include:

Hot Water Extraction

Also known as steam cleaning, this method involves shooting hot water with a cleaning agent into the carpet. The solution is then sucked out with a powerful vacuum, which removes dirt and debris from the carpeting. The hot water also destroys bacteria and allergens.

Dry Vacuum Cleaning

The most conventional method, dry vacuum cleaning is precisely that. It’s perhaps the only method you can do by yourself without the help of a professional, but it does not allow for a deep clean that removes allergen and all dirt.

If you have pets or are concerned about getting “deep down” clean, consider hiring a professional.

Long-Term Carpet Maintenance

In addition to keeping your carpet clean, you should also take into account a few other considerations, such as:

  • You should ventilate your rooms adequately and avoid moisture on your carpets. A wet carpet can develop bacteria and mold, which are notoriously hard to remove and pose a health risk.
  • Mold can spread from your carpet to other areas of your house, including the subfloor, potentially causing costly damage.
  • You’ll want to avoid leaving heavy furniture on the same spot on your carpet for long periods of time. This can cause the carpet’s integrity to deteriorate, so move your furniture just a few centimeters every now and then.

What’s the Best Kind of Flooring for Homes with Dogs?

February 27, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

Are your old floors in dire need of a revamp? Well, don’t forget about your pets. When looking for affordable flooring, you’ll need a solution that suits every member of your family… including pets.

44% of U.S. households now have a dog, and while they’re adorable creatures, they sure can be a handful. In fact, dogs are notorious for making a mess, and your flooring is first in the firing line. So, choose your material wisely, or you could be faced with unsightly stains and discolorations, for years to come. But what is the best flooring for dogs?

Here are three of the best flooring solutions for a happy home—and one bonus option you should avoid at all costs.

jack russel puppy on white carpet

The Best Flooring for Dogs

The following three options are all excellent flooring choices. Read on to find out why.

Luxury Vinyl

Luxury vinyl may be the best flooring for dogs and dog owners in Milwaukee. There certainly are plenty of advantages for pet owners, including:

  • Low cost
  • Easy to clean
  • Highly resistant (won’t scratch or stain)
  • Inaudible to walk on

In fact, the only real downside to vinyl is that it may start to dull over time. To combat this, we suggest opting for a thick finish layer with an aluminum oxide coating.

Your dog will love it, too. As luxury vinyl can use radiant heating coils, your best friend will keep cool through the summer and stay toasty warm in the winter.

Luxury vinyl is also textured enough to prevent turning your home into a skating rink. In fact, it’s a perfect balance, allowing claws to grip without damaging the surface.

Laminate

For pet mess, laminate flooring gets an A+.

It’s low maintenance and easy to clean, so you needn’t worry about catching an accident before it stains, either. For those with dogs who seem to knock over everything, laminate is ideal.

The only problem is your little guy or gal might not think so. The slickness of the surface means your dog can slide a bit too much, as there’s no traction for their paws. So, if your pet’s a fast mover, don’t be surprised if he or she collides with your cabinets while bouncing through the house. They’ll be no scratches or scuffs to worry about, though!

Carpeting

Lay down carpeting and your dog will be your biggest fan (for at least 10 minutes). Carpeting is perfect for your canine to roll around on, slobber all over, and generally have a good time with. But be careful: Carpeting is the hardest flooring to clean, by a large margin.

So, if you’ve got a messy pup who’s not house-trained or an older dog who’s known to cause a scene, you’d be advised to give carpeting a miss.

Carpets can also start smelling over time and hair shedding is very apparent. Not good.

(Not) Hardwood

We had to include hardwood flooring here, but only as a warning. It’s definitely not the best flooring for dogs. Hardwood may look beautiful, but trust us, you’re barking up the wrong tree.

Wood flooring + loveable dog = disaster

Your pet’s nails will dent wooden surfaces, and a nail trim just won’t do enough to stop the damage. Stains are a nightmare, too. Substances tend to disappear straight into the grain, which could require costly refinishing jobs. Avoid hardwood and save yourself an inevitable headache.

Best Flooring for Dogs in Your Milwaukee Home?

In our humble opinion, luxury vinyl takes the cake. It’s affordable, resistant to scratches, and cleans easily. That said, you can’t go wrong with a laminate surface, either!
