4 Benefits of Carpet Padding to the Life of Your Carpet

January 17, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

A carpet lasts between 8 and 10 years with proper maintenance and normal traffic. After this, it starts showing obvious signs of deterioration. Most people focus all of their attention on the look and feel of the carpet itself. But carpet padding, although hidden, is the secret to a long-lasting and comfortable carpet.

carpet corner pulled back to reveal new carpet padding

Let’s take a look at a few ways padding improves your carpet’s performance!

1. Increases Carpet Lifespan

Over time, dirt slowly builds up and becomes lodged between your carpet and the floor. With every step you take, the pressure from your feet can cause the dirt particles to rip the fabric in your carpet. This can drastically reduce its lifespan.

Carpet padding adds an extra layer of protection. These pads absorb all the impact of furniture and day-to-day foot traffic.

Not only do pads improve the longevity of your carpet, but they also protect your floor. A solid pad can help prevent your floor from staining due to spills.

2. Provides Extra Cushion

Carpet padding offers a long list of subtle benefits. But one of the first things you’ll notice after installing a new carpet with pads is how much foot comfort it provides. A padded carpet’s ability to absorb the impact of your footsteps also gives it a much softer feel.

Nearly 8 out of 10 Americans deal with foot problems at some point during their lives. A softer carpet can help ease your foot pain, especially if you who have an issue with your heels.

3. Improves Home Insulation

Believe it or not, carpet padding can add insulation to your home.

Carpet is a very effective thermal insulator, as it mitigates heat loss via the floor. Typically, the thicker the carpet, the higher the R-value (insulation value). But the R-value of carpet padding is usually higher than that of the carpet on its own.

Cities in the Midwest consistently experience the coldest winters in the country. So a carpet that insulates your home efficiently can save you quite a bit of money on your monthly utility bill.

4. Reduces Noise

Do you find your home to be a bit too noisy? If so, try adding padding to your new or existing carpet.

Carpet does a good job of reducing noise on its on own. But padding can enhance a carpet’s ability to dampen sound. This is particularly useful if you have an upstairs room or a basement that you frequent.

Keep in mind that some pads are better at reducing noise than others. Thicker pads tend to absorb sound more effectively. But your best bet is to look for a pad type that has a high Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC).

Choosing the Right Carpet Padding

Always start by checking your carpet manufacturer’s suggestions for density and thickness. Selecting the wrong padding can cause bunching and separation.

The ideal padding for your carpet depends on how much traffic flows through the room. For example, soft and thick padding works well for bedrooms. On the other hand, living rooms and hallways require firmer and thinner padding.

Carpet Care: Should You Hire a Professional or DIY?

January 3, 2018 by My Affordable Flooring

Does your carpet need a good deep cleaning? Have you noticed any stains or signs of wear-and-tear? You might wonder whether you should clean it yourself or hire a pro.

The truth is that both options have pros and cons. DIY carpet cleaning is cheaper. However, unless you know what you’re doing, you could make things worse. Common mistakes, such as using too much cleaning solution, can damage your carpet. Professional carpet care services are faster and yield better results. Those who work in this industry know how to protect the color and remove stains. And contrary to popular belief, these services are not expensive. Prices vary from $75 to $350. It depends on the carpet size and type, materials, and products used.

Feeling confused? Let’s see the difference between professional carpet care and DIY cleaning:

DIY Carpet Cleaning Pros and Cons

Cleaning a carpet by yourself may seem ideal, especially if you’re short on money. After all, most cleaning products cost around $15-$20, so they fit into any budget. Not to mention that you can make your own cleaning formula at home using all natural ingredients.

Beware that carpet manufacturers don’t recommend DIY cleaning. You might use the wrong products, over-wet your carpet, or make too few vacuum passes. Additionally, many commercial cleaners are not suitable for delicate fabrics, such as wool. Improper cleaning may result in fiber damage, color loss, staining, or spots. Too much cleaning solution, for instance, can lead to mold growth and turn spots into stains. Some formulas can damage your carpet or attract dirt.

Sure, you can always buy a professional cleaning machine, but is it really worth? This kind of equipment costs as much as $3,000 and requires training. A regular vacuum won’t do the trick.

With DIY carpet cleaning, you’ll save money and do things at your own pace. Unfortunately, it’s risky and time-consuming. In the worst case scenario, you could ruin the carpet.

Are Professional Carpet Care Services Worth It?

Professional carpet cleaning is slightly more expensive than DIY work. However, it gives you peace of mind and helps increase the lifespan of your carpet.

Professionals use advanced cleaning formulas that are not available in most stores. These products contain antibacterial substances that kill 99 percent of germs and allergens.

The convenience factor is a welcome bonus too. With professional carpet care, you’ll save time and get the best value for your money. This service comes with lots of perks, such as:

  • Grooming
  • Speed drying
  • Fabric protection
  • Spot removal
  • Moving furniture
  • Pre-vacuuming

Professional carpet cleaners are certified by the IICRC. This means they have extensive training and know how to deal with just about any type of fabric. They will make your carpet look like new and even put the furniture back.

What Option Is Right for You?

Without a doubt, professional carpet care is superior to DIY work. Even though you can still handle those small spills yourself, hire a pro for regular maintenance. The choice is up to you.

7 Signs You Could Use a Professional Carpet Cleaning Service

November 30, 2017 by My Affordable Flooring

Imagine, if you will, a house. A house like any other on the block. This is your house.

A friend knocks on the door. It is opened. They enter.

They scream and throw themselves onto the lawn, their twisted face only able to utter the single phrase, “The carpet!”

Before this Rod Serling nightmare becomes your reality, perhaps it is time you looked into getting a professional carpet cleaning.

a carpet being vacuumed

The Obvious Signs

To avoid forcing a friend or loved one into spastic cries of pain on your own lawn, learn the signs your carpet may be in need of professional help. Alternatively, you can dispense with carpet altogether and savor the beauty of a custom installed hardwood floor.

Visible Stains

Stains are discolorations on the surface of carpet that result from foreign matter being soaked into the material. Some of these substances can be obvious, like a dropped glass of wine, but others can appear slowly as buildup over time.

Unsavory Odor

A lingering and noticeable odor filling a room may be a sign of trapped particles in the carpet. These particles can accumulate over time from foot traffic, particularly socks, or more immediate messes left behind by pets or their human equivalents — children.

Dander/Allergens

Dust, pollen, and other particles become trapped in carpet over time. These can be released when walked on, or especially when vacuumed. If you notice an abundance of red-eyes and sneezes in the household, it is time to find help.

Clumps

These form when clear, sticky materials attach fibers to fibers. Longer strands of hair can also act like a loom and knit together fibers creating hard masses that feel rough or sharp on feet.

Mold Growth

Unlike other visible stains, mold presents in dark green or black shades and mostly at the edges of walls. Mold grows rapidly in humid environments and can cause respiratory distress.

Keeping it Longer

Less visible signs that a carpet is in distress and needing a professional carpet cleaning exist. These invisible, but tangible, benefits of carpet cleaning lead to an increase in years of use.

Rejuvenation

A deep cleaning pulls detritus from the carpet and out of the pad, leading to more spring in the fibers. Carpet that has gone flat and feels less plush than it once did can benefit a lot from deep cleaning.

Longevity

Much like teeth cleaned at the dentist or a car taken through a mechanical wash, a professional carpet cleaning can make future cleanings more effective. Dirt and particles come up easier from newer carpet than worn and soiled carpet.

Periodic deep cleaning will add years to the life cycle of the carpet. Even better, deep cleaning improves the health of your carpet and your family.

Professional Carpet Cleaning

If you want either of these benefits or notice any of the visible signs of soiling in your carpet, consider getting informed about cleaning service professionals in your area. Better yet, learn more about carpet cleaning services and contact us for an appointment today.

Carpet 101 Part 2: Types of Carpet and their Applications

April 17, 2017 by My Affordable Flooring

MAF Blog 1 May- Carpet 101 Part 1- Common Terms and Types of Fiber (1)

At My Affordable Flooring, we’re thrilled to share our expertise in carpet installation with our wonderful customers. In our last post, we covered the basics of carpet, including terminology and the types of fibers that are available. This time, we’ll take a close look at the way that those fibers are woven into a type of carpet, and how that affects where that carpet should be installed in your home.

Many Types of Carpet

The type of carpet fibers as well as their height, or “pile”, aren’t the only factors that determine the softness of carpet. The way the pile is woven, and whether or not it is cut plays into the luxuriousness of the carpet’s feel as well.

There are two main ways that the fiber pile is finished, resulting in cut pile or loop pile. Cut pile means the fibers are cut evenly, and loop pile means the fibers are looped over and the ends attached to the backing.

There are a few different types of cut pile, each with its own unique properties:

  • Textured carpet is the most popular option, due to its high durability to price point ratio. While textured carpet is very soft, it typically isn’t as dense as more high-end types, but still has a tight construction that resists dirt.
  • Frieze carpet is shorter, with a twisted fiber that stands up to heavy traffic, making it ideal for commercial areas. Frieze carpet doesn’t show footprints, keeping an orderly and clean look throughout the day.
  • Saxony is a style that results in a very dense and smooth appearance, which is appropriate for formal, luxury settings. Saxony’s high-end appearance is frequently referred to as “plush”.

Loop pile carpet is extremely durable, and it’s tight loops resist dirt and moisture. There are two main types of loop pile carpet:

  • Berber is a popular type of carpet because of its longevity, durability, and stain-resistance. Berber’s tight loops vary in size, giving it a unique look that combines style with performance.
  • Level Loop is well suited for high traffic, commercial areas because its loops are tufted and of equal length, giving it a very smooth appearance. Level loop is also very easy to maintain, but not as soft as other carpet.

Carpet 101 Part 1: Common Terms and Types of Fiber

April 17, 2017 by My Affordable Flooring

MAF Blog 1 May- Carpet 101 Part 1- Common Terms and Types of Fiber

For comfort, warmth, and an overall cozy feeling for your home, carpet can’t be beat. In today’s vibrant market for flooring materials, carpet holds the undisputed title for sheer variety of colors, textures, styles, and patterns. In the Milwaukee area, no one knows carpet installation like My Affordable Flooring.

You may know that the variety of colors and patterns available in carpet is staggering, but did you know that there are many different types of carpet fibers available, and some are more appropriate for certain areas of the home than others? Let’s take a deep dive into carpet and discuss its common types as well as their advantages and disadvantages.

Getting familiar with Carpet Terminology

Carpet is constructed of fibers which are spun together and attached to a woven backing. Different types of carpet have longer or shorter fibers, which is referred to as the “pile” of the carpet. The density of the fibers is another factor which can contribute to the strength and resilience of the carpet, as well as the texture, which determines how the fibers are looped, twisted or cut. Texture also greatly affects the look of the carpet, and determines how it reacts to traffic – and whether or not it shows footprints and tracks from the vacuum cleaner.

The quality and beauty of a particular carpet are analyzed using a PAR rating. This scale rates carpet on a scale of 1-5 for Performance, Appearance, and Retention, with 5 meaning the carpet is highly durable and will retain its appearance for many years.

Types of Carpet Fibers

Carpets are made from a variety of natural and synthetic materials, with Nylon being the most common. Nylon is extremely durable and easy to clean, and soft. It performs very well in high traffic areas, and it’s affordable price makes it a contender for any application. Other synthetic fibers, such as Olefin, Polyester, Triexta, and Acrylic offer similar levels of durability with improved feel and deeper color, at an affordable price point. Natural Wool is also a common choice, although its high price may be a dealbreaker for some. Wool’s natural properties make it stain-resistant, durable and resilient, with a deep, rich look.

In our next post, we’ll discuss the different types of carpet, and how the construction and weave of the fibers affects a carpet’s feel and appropriate application.

How Your Flooring Choices Affect the Resale Value of Your Home

April 17, 2017 by My Affordable Flooring

MAF Blog 1 How Your Flooring Choices Affect the Resale Value of Your Home

We are fortunate enough be enjoying a housing market that has really hit its stride. Home sales are on a steady incline – as are prices – making it a great time to buy or sell. If this booming market has you considering your options, you may be interested in ways to maximize the value of your home, including new flooring. With all the flooring options available to you, which will give you the most bang for your buck? My Affordable Flooring, your Milwaukee flooring experts, has the answers you need.

When it comes to flooring and appealing to buyers, one thing is clear: old flooring is a major negative. Stained, worn carpet, dated and cracked tile, and water-damaged hardwood will turn off buyers and drop their number quickly. They’ll see old flooring as a built-in cost, something they will have to pay to replace, often before they even move in.

For many, the obvious quick-fix solution may be to install carpet. It’s easy to picture your potential buyer walking in, enjoying the smell of new carpeting, and feeling like this house is ready for a new owner as well. However, the modern housing market has distinct tastes, and on average, carpeting is not always one of them.

Until recently, wall-to-wall carpet was prized in the housing market, and held significant value for your sale. Modern buyers are seeing carpet, even freshly installed, as of lower value than hardwood and even some newer laminate materials. Often, if you’re looking to improve the flooring appeal of your home, it’s advised to pull out old carpet and restore or install wood flooring.

My Affordable Flooring offers expert services for all flooring types, so no matter which choice you make to maximize your home’s value, you know you’re in the right hands. We can recommend a flooring type that suits your home and gets you the highest return on investment for the installation. Potential buyers will be amazed at the quality of the work, and encouraged by the fact that the right floor is already in place.

Health Benefits of Professional Carpet Cleaning

February 15, 2017 by My Affordable Flooring

MAF Blog 2- Benefits of Professional Carpet Cleaning (1)

Many homeowners see professional carpet cleaning as an expensive luxury, intended to keep carpets and homes smelling fresh by removing all the dirt that the vacuum cleaner leaves behind. Others have struggled with rented carpet cleaning equipment, spending hours of hard work only to be left with an unsatisfying and short-lived “fresh” smell, and carpet that is usually still dirty.

The truth is that the benefits of carpet cleaning go well beyond just deep cleaning. Dirty carpet can be a health hazard, lowing air quality in your home and adversely affecting the health of your family.

Airborne pollutants such as pet dander and allergens frequently become trapped in carpet, only to be released into the air as toxic gas when the carpet is vacuumed or even when the carpet is walked on. My Affordable Flooring’ carpet cleaning experts use hot water extraction (also known as steam cleaning) to trap pollutants and kill bacteria, and then remove them from the carpet. Not only does this remove many stains and discoloration from carpets, it also improves the air quality of your home. This reduces the risk of an adverse reaction from those with sensitivity to allergens.

Beyond the allergens that collect in carpet from daily activity in the home, another concern is dust mites and the allergens they leave behind. These microscopic bugs not only make a home in your carpet, they leave behind their feces and body parts as well, all of which are launched into the air when carpet is disturbed. Hot water extraction kills dust mites, and powerful vacuum forces remove them and their mess from your carpet.

Mold is also a concern, particularly in humid seasons. My Affordable Flooring removes dirt and debris from your carpets with high heat and and powerful extraction, leaving clean and dry carpet fibers. Once your carpet is clean and dry, there is no place for mold and mildew to grow.
